First grade is the year everything starts: real reading, real numbers, real habits. It's also the year most new homeschool parents are the most nervous. Good news: the list of what a 1st grader truly needs is short, and every bit of it is teachable at a kitchen table by a parent who can read aloud.
What 1st grade actually needs to cover
- Phonics, systematically. Letter sounds, then blends, digraphs, and word families, in order, with sight words alongside. This is the make-or-break subject of the year. Our Reading year runs 120 lessons with 20 little decodable storybooks matched to each stage.
- Math facts and number sense. Counting, place value, and addition and subtraction within 10 until they're automatic. Mastery, not a race: one skill until it sticks.
- Handwriting and first sentences. Letter formation, then real sentences about real things.
- The wonder subjects. Science, history, geography: at this age these are read-alouds and conversations, not textbooks.
- Faith and character, woven in. Not a Bible worksheet bolted onto a secular program, but Scripture, virtue, and service running through the whole week. Our Scripture quotations use the King James Version.
What to look for in the curriculum (the checklist)
- Scripted lessons. If you can read aloud, you can teach 1st grade. Every lesson here runs the same four steps: TEACH, TALK, WORK, CHECK.
- Every answer key included. Grading from scratch is where homeschool moms burn out.
- Place by ability, not age. A first grader can be ahead in math and beginning in reading. The program should flex without shame in either direction.
- Short lessons. Thirty minutes is the ceiling at this age. The whole school day fits in about two hours.
- A real answer to socialization. Ours is a whole subject: Field Challenges, real-world missions your child completes in town, from ordering his or her own food to starting a first little business.
Is my child ready for 1st grade work? Readiness is about ability, not birthdays. If your child knows most letter sounds and can count past 20, start. If not, start anyway and go slower; at a school with one student, there is no "behind."
